Teeth Straightening and treatment for a displaced tooth

To straighten teeth or treat displaced teeth you need an Orthodontist. So, what is the difference between a Dentist and an Orthodontist.
Dentistry is concerned with the prevention and treatment of oral diseases, including that of the teeth, supporting structures and soft tissues of the mouth. A dentist is a General Practitioner.

An Orthodontist is a Specialist Dentist dealing with the prevention and correction of irregularities to the teeth. It is a very specialised branch of dentistry.

Teeth Straightening:

Braces and surgery are the common methods of correction. Provided that the teeth and gums are strong and healthy, braces are a great option for all ages. For children, they are best, as their bodies are still growing and adaptable.
  1. Metal Braces:  these are preferred for complex alignment issues and use wire, bands and brackets. In extreme cases, head gear may be necessary.
  2. Ceramic Braces: these work the same as metal ones but are made of ceramic. They are either clear or tooth coloured, but tend to stain or break easily.
  3. Invisible Braces: these are made out of clear plastic and are specific to each person’s mouth. They are like sports mouth guards and are fitted over each tooth and have to be replaced twice monthly.
  4. Lingual Braces: the side of the teeth facing the tongue is the Lingual surface and these braces are similar to metal braces but attach to the back of the teeth. They are very expensive.

Surgery to reposition the teeth and gums is another option. However, one may still have to wear braces. If the teeth are affecting the ability to speak or chew, another type of surgery called Orthognathic surgery to realign the jaw may be recommended.

Displaced Teeth or Dental Avulsion:

This is the complete displacement of teeth from the jaw bones, often due to trauma. This is considered an emergency treatment. Immediate replantation is the best option.

When this is not possible, replacement with artificial teeth or prosthetic, may be necessary and depends upon each case.

Let Us Refill Confidence In Your Smile Through Orthodontics

Dealing with the treatment of teeth and jaws, orthodontics, is one of the oldest branches of dentistry. Orthodontics treatment helps in correcting wayward, decayed and crooked teeth which threaten to hamper our smile. In short, they help in the overall preservation of our dental health.

Scope of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatments are used to correct the following irregularities.
Overbite – also known as buck bite, this condition occurs when the upper row of teeth sticks out over the lower teeth row.
Underbite – this condition occurs when lower row teeth appear far in front of the upper row of teeth. This is also called bull dog appearance.
Crossbite – this condition is defined when the front teeth on the upper row and lower row do not coincide when biting together.
Openbite – this occurs when a space occurs between the side of front tooth when the molars are bitten together
Misplaced midline – this occurs when the central midline between the upper front teeth and lower front teeth do not coincide together.
Spacing – gaps due to missing teeth or not filled up spaces can be treated with orthodontics treatment.
Crowding – dental crowding occurs when the more tooth than what the ridge can support crowd together.

Orthodontic Treatment Techniques

Orthodontic treatment is decided based on a diagnosis done with the help of physical examination, X-rays and so on. The different methodologies used for treatment involves fixed or removable appliances which helps in influencing the growth of jaws, movement of teeth and retraining the muscles.

The orthodontic treatment measures include: -
Braces – the most common orthodontic treatment appliance, it helps in teeth alignment. With advancement in technology, a wide variety of braces are available. Aligners are their removable counterparts
Space maintainers – these are used to reserve space for the teeth to grow back. This helps in avoiding teeth crowding.
Jaw repositioning appliances – these are used for positioning and retainaing the jaw positions in issues like TMJ.
Palatal expander – these are used in widening the curve of upper jaw with the help of palatal plates that are placed in the roof of the mouth.

A multispecialty dental centre, Srivari Dental Clinic, based in Chennai, is equipped with the latest technology infrastructure and treatment options.
